Introduction to Meditation: A Five Session Practical Course
Introduction to Meditation: A Five Session Practical Course
A practical five session course suitable for complete beginners, returning meditators, and those wishing to develop a clearer, more consistent meditation practice. Across the course, we will explore a range of meditation techniques, including body awareness, breath meditation, mantra, working with thoughts, movement, loving kindness, sound, visualisation and everyday mindfulness. We will also discuss how meditation can support stress management, sleep, focus and general wellbeing.
The course is calm and accessible, with an emphasis on direct experience. No previous experience is needed, and there is no need to sit cross legged, stop thinking, or force the mind to be calm. Each session helps participants to gradually build a toolkit of practices that can be used in daily life.
£16.99 PER CLASS DROP-IN £80 FOR WHOLE 5 WEEK COURSE
All practices can be adapted for comfort, or for any other reason as needed. Participants are welcome to sit on a chair, cushion or mat, or to lie down or stand if that feels right for them.
Session outline
Week 1: Introduction to Meditation
An accessible introduction to what meditation is and what it is not. This session introduces the basics of attention and awareness through guided practices including a body scan meditation, breath awareness, mantra meditation, loving kindness meditation and open awareness through sound.
Week 2: Working with Thoughts
An exploration of the relationship we have with thoughts. This session looks at noticing thoughts without judgement, gently returning to a chosen focus, and understanding that a wandering mind does not mean meditation has gone wrong. Practices include a body scan meditation, a breath based noticing and labelling meditation, a gentle stream visualisation, a simple object meditation and open awareness with ambient sound.
Week 3: Stillness and Movement
A session exploring how meditation can be practised both in stillness and in movement. This includes a body scan meditation, walking meditation, mantra meditation, and a simple box breathing practice.
Week 4: Rhythm and Visualisation
An introduction to rhythm, repetition, sound and visualisation as supports for meditation. This session includes a body scan meditation, a sound based focus practice, rhythmic mantra meditation and a guided visualisation practice.
Week 5: Developing Daily Practice
A practical session focused on building a simple, realistic and sustainable meditation practice beyond the course. This session includes a body scan meditation, breath awareness, everyday mindfulness and a meditation using an ordinary object as the focus for attention.
