TAROT - A LIVING EXPERIENCE
A 10 Week Course taking you through the Tarot as a lived experience. Covering both the Major and Minor Arcanas. Suitable for beginners as well as those with some prior knowledge of Tarot, but who might like to work with it at a more intuitive level. No prior knowledge or experience is necessary.
During this course, we aim to introduce students to the extraordinary world of Tarot as a tool for personal enrichment, insight, intuition, meaning and understanding. The ancient art of Tarot, steeped in history and tradition, has come more and more into its own in the modern age, where its full potential for personal enlightenment is still only just being understood. Throughout this course, we aim to take students through a ‘lived’ experience of tarot in ways which will enable each person to connect directly with the images and archetypes in a more immediate and dynamic way, and to apply it to their daily lives.
Week by week, we will focus on certain cards using a variety of visualisations, intuitive exercises, and story telling, as well as looking at key meanings, background and context. As the course progresses, we will introduce you to taking a guided journey through the Major Arcana beginning with The Fool, using story telling as a more intuitive way to get to know the cards, and later, to bring the cards together and ‘connect it all up’. We’ll look at some background into the elements and their connection to each of the four suits of the minor arcana, how the numerology and astrology tie in, and some basic spreads and tips for better reading practice.
Each session which focuses on the cards, will have an accompanying hand out giving a further, more general and detailed meaning of the cards covered, but we do not give these out beforehand, as the whole purpose of the activations in class is to allow students to have a direct encounter with the archetypes. This gives them a personal experience of each card, before ‘reading up on it’, which allows each person to gain their own insight and personal feelings of the card, before getting bogged down in ‘all the literature’, and trust us, there’s a lot of it out there!
By the end of the course, we aim to have each student able to practice a twenty minute to half hour reading with a partner, allowing for feedback, and for students to have had their own personal journey through the tarot, along with feeling they have a basic understanding of tarot and some of its’ applications.
Throughout the course, we work with the premise that Tarot is so much more than ‘fortune telling’. In fact, for us, both as readers and teachers, we do not see tarot as fortune telling at all, and feel it is at its very best when used for guidance, insight and deep understanding. It is a fantastic tool for living life in a deeper, more insightful and meaningful way.
Alongside the lessons in person, students will also have the opportunity to join a private facebook group, where they will be able to share their experiences of the daily exercises, get feedback from their peers, ask questions, and arrange ‘swapsies’ and story telling sessions with each other. (All of this will become more apparent during the course).
During the Course, we will mostly be working with the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot when sharing images and archetypes, for the simple reason that it is one of the most widely recognizable, and is often used in many beginners’ guide books. This is not a pre-requisite however, and students can work with any deck of their choice, our only recommendation being that the deck chosen would be best if it has picture cards for the Minor Arcana, rather than numbers or symbols such as in the Marseille Tarot.
The course structure is as follows:-
Week 1 – After a short introduction, and a little background on The Tarot, we’re away! Straight into Living the Tarot! In week one we will cover the first six cards of the Major Arcana, The Fool, The Magician, The High Priestess, The Empress, The Emperor and The Hierophant. We will take you on a journey to meet and connect with each archetype, with time after for notes and feedback. In this session, we will also introduce you to daily tarot activations, story telling diary, journalling and how to get the most out of the facebook group. A lot to take in, in your first week, we know, but this will set the tone for the rest of the course and help you on your way for the rest of the journey!
Week 2 – In week two, we will begin with a Q and A and feedback on how your journeying with the cards has been going through the week, and then we will go on to work with the next six cards in the Major Arcana – The Lovers, The Chariot, Strength, The Hermit, The Wheel of Fortune and Justice. Again, journeying to meet and connect with each archetype, with time after for notetaking and feedback. In this session, we will also introduce you to the concept of `Tarot Tune Ins`, which is another great tool for daily messaging and getting a more personal insight into the cards.
Week 3 – Once again, we’ll begin session 3 with a Q and A and feedback on how your journeying with the cards has been going through the week, then we’re on to the next six cards of the Major Arcana, The Hanged Man, Death, Temperence, The Devil, The Tower and The Star. As before, we will journey with each archetype to meet and connect with them with time for notetaking and feedback. Then we’ll have another go with ‘Tarot Tune Ins’, but this time, with a question and a theme. Now you get to start learning how to work with the Tarot for guidance.
Week 4 – In week 4, now that we’re coming to the end of the Major Arcana, we’re going to do something to solidify and bring it all together. We’ll begin with our usual Q and A, followed by journeying with the last four cards of the Major Arcana, The Moon, The Sun, Judgement and The World. Then after a short break, we’ll journey with the Fool, through the whole of the Major Arcana.
Week 5 – Congratulations! We have now reached The Minor Arcana. We begin week 5 with a short overview of the Minor Arcana, taking in the four suits, the elements, astrology and numerology. Then we will go on to explore the suit of wands and its element of fire, taking in the astrological fire signs. Our journeying now is slightly different. We will be working our way through the suits, with seeing, feeling, noting, and then a short encounter with each numbered card in the wands suit.
Week 6 – In week 6 we’ll begin with a review and Q and A of your journeying through your week of working with the wands. Then we’ll be going on to work with the suit of swords and its element of air, taking in the astrological air signs, and working, as before, with seeing, feeling, noting and a short encounter with each numbered card in the swords suit.
Week 7 – In week 7, we’ll begin once again with a review and Q and A of your journeying with the Swords, followed by our next journey with the suit of Cups and its element of water, taking in the astrological water signs and working as before with seeing, feeling, noting and a short encounter with each numbered card of the Cups suit.
Week 8 – In week 8, after a review and Q and A of your journeying with the Cups, we’ll be exploring the last of the numbered suits cards, this week, working with the suit of Pentacles and its element of earth, taking in the astrological earth signs, and going on, as before, to work with seeing, feeling, noting and a short encounter with each of the numbered cards in the suit of Pentacles. At the end of this session, we’ll have a recap and a slightly more detailed look at the elements and numerology of the numbered suits cards.
Week 9 – Welcome to week 9, where we have now reached the Court cards of the Minor Arcana. We begin this week with our usual review and Q and A of your journeyings through the previous week with the Pentacles, and then we go on to explore the Court cards. We’ll begin with a brief pointer to each Court and then take you on to an encounter with each one. Following on from this we’ll have a look at which Court you feel you personally identify with (never forget this can, and does change with different life phases and experiences, and most of us are most if not ALL of the Court cards at different times in our lives, or even at different times in the day!), and have some fun seeing if we can apply some of the Courts to other people in our lives. Now that we have covered the whole deck of Tarot cards, if time allows in this session, we will aim to have a bit of reading practice with a partner, using a three card spread.
Week 10 – So here we are in week 10, where we get to put it all into practice! To begin week 10 we’ll have a brief review and Q and A of your work through the week with the Court cards, and then you’re invited, if you feel brave enough, and we hope you will by now, to take a partner and exchange a twenty minute to half hour reading for each other, with time afterwards for feedback from your partner. In this session we’ll encourage you to read in a linear, story telling way, or one or two three card spreads, unless you follow your intuition entirely and go where the reading takes you! Don’t worry, we will give you guidance. After a short break for tea, we’ll then round up with a brief overview of some basic reading spreads, tips and guidance on reading for others, tarot ethics and practice, and a general recap, with Q and A, and book/deck recommendations, followed by a look at where you can go from here.
